KIRKLEES Council is wrestling with budget cuts – but has still found cash to pay for a worker based in another authority.
The Cabinet has agreed to help fund a Trails Officer managed by Barnsley Council – paying out £3,535 in the first year.
The officer is working on the Trans Pennine Trail, which crosses the country from the Yorkshire coast to Merseyside.
It passes to the south of Huddersfield, near Penistone, but there are plans to link it to Kirklees with paths from Kirkburton.
The trail is expected to attract many walkers and horse riders.
Kirklees is one of 27 councils asked to help fund the officer and support staff.
Council leader Mehboob Khan said: “It will have benefits for Kirklees and attract cyclists and walkers to the area.”
