NEW anti-speeding measures will be introduced on a dangerous Huddersfield road.

Kirklees Council announced plans to improve safety on the B6108 between Meltham and Lockwood.

Cyclist Adrian Daniels, 22, was seriously injured in a collision last week – the latest in a string of accidents along the road.

Mobile speed cameras will be introduced along the B6108 by the end of the month.

A Kirklees spokeswoman explained yesterday why a fixed camera was not being installed.

“Using mobile cameras allows any point on the whole of the route to be potentially enforced rather than one particular location,” she said.

“New equipment also allows night-time enforcement.”

Kirklees will also bring in other changes along the road, which connects Lockwood, Netherton and Meltham.

These include:

Cutting the existing 60mph speed limit to 50mph between Netherton and Meltham

Installing two new vehicle-activated signs which will flash to indicate the speed limit within the 30mph limit between Netherton and Lockwood

Painting double white lines to prevent overtaking between Healey House bends and Bent Ley Road in Meltham.

Kirklees Cabinet member for roads Clr David Sheard backed the new measures yesterday.

The Heckmondwike Labour man said: “This route has seen serious accidents and the new measures should help bring traffic speeds under control and reassure the local community that safety on this road is our priority.

“After the initial phase of enforcement the road will be put on a rota along with the existing mobile camera routes throughout West Yorkshire and it will be enforced on a regular basis, including late evenings when serious and fatal crashes have occurred.”

There have been a string of serious accidents on the B6108 in the last few years.
