A YEAR after Kirklees scrapped its area committees, councillors look set to revive the title this week.

Last May Kirklees Council abolished its area committees, which provided funding for things like park benches, street lighting and hanging baskets.

The 12 grassroots bodies were merged into six larger groups, known as town or valley committees.

The three area committees in Mirfield, Kirkburton and Denby Dale were amalgamated into a single body, while the two Huddersfield area committees were merged.

But tomorrow councillors will decide whether to bring back the label “area committee”.

The proposal at the monthly meeting of Kirklees comes after consultation with the six town and valley committees.

The new bodies would be:

Batley, Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee

Dewsbury Area Committee

Huddersfield Area Committee

Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton Area Committee

Spen Valley Area Committee

The Valleys Area Committee.
