HUNDREDS more students are studying in Huddersfield – and that has hit Kirklees Council coffers.

Student digs are exempt from council tax and the expansion of the University of Huddersfield has caused a drop in expected revenue.

Kirklees Council has revealed that it has under-estimated the number of students in the town by about 400 this year meaning it will receive less than it planned in council tax.

A council spokesman said: “Properties solely occupied by students are exempt from council tax and the average number of students in Kirklees is rising due to the university expanding.

“Overall the estimated number of students is up by an extra 400 from the 2011 year forecast.

“This trend will be monitored and adjusted in future years.”
