It didn’t take long for motorists to express their anger over the advent of traffic lights at Ainley Top roundabout.

Barely had the lights been switched on just before Wednesday lunchtime before they took to social media to vent their spleen – but the council insists the lights are still being fine-tuned and the work is not yet fully finished.

There are often problems with the volume of traffic queueing on the slip road exiting the M62 during the teatime and evening peak period trying to get on to Ainley Top roundabout and some motorists feared the introduction of traffic lights may have made them worse.

Nigel Hepworth of Fixby said: “I think the problem on Wednesday night was that the third lane on the roundabout was not operational so that didn’t help. I think once that comes on stream it could be OK.”

But Gemma Thompson wrote on Facebook: “Awful, queued from Junction 25 for 45 mins to get to Ainley Top.”

Another motorist said: “It was good for me yesterday afternoon coming from Manchester. Nightmare coming in from Leeds.”

Around £2m has been spent on the highway improvements to one of Yorkshire’s largest and busiest roundabouts.

But Robert Ainley wrote on social media: “Why not part-time lights?

“Had to wait at two sets of lights this morning at 4am and there wasn’t another car in sight. Fair enough at the peak times but on all the time?”

And Michael McPhee added: “They’ve just made it worse. Why aren’t there peak time traffic lights therefore traffic in off-peak times can get through smoothly. Then at peak times lights come on so it’s safer?”

Bob Hardy, 86, of Edgerton said: “I can’t understand why they have put traffic lights on there. I use the roundabout regularly and have not had a problem there. I think it will be a big mistake.”

A council spokeswoman said “Work is ongoing at Ainley Top, and traffic congestion is within the levels we would expect at this stage. We are in the process of testing the lighting sequences and making changes to improve the flow of traffic.

“We expect to have the roundabout fully open and the initial monitoring completed by early next week.

“We also expect there to be a period of adjustment as motorists adapt to traffic lights which were not there before”.
