FIVE sports clubs will share £100,000 of council cash.

The cabinet decided yesterday to help groups improve their facilities.

Kirkburton Football Club will receive £20,000 towards the £80,000 cost of new pitches, which will benefit 600 people, including 100 children.

The cabinet also agreed to give Thornhill Tennis Club £12,00 for floodlights costing £18,000, which will benefit 250 people.

Huddersfield Rugby Union Club will receive £24,000 towards the £75,000 cost of new drainage on three pitches. The work will benefit 310 people.

Longley Community Sports Club needs £50,000 for floodlights, a practice fence and a new artificial surface for its two tennis courts. The council has contributed £20,000 to the scheme, which will benefit 300 people.

Thongsbridge Tennis Club will receive £25,000 towards the £161,000 cost of a children’s gym.

However, Bradley and Colnebridge Cricket Club was refused £17,000 towards draining the outfield at a cost of nearly £20,000.

Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Christine Stansfield backs the investment.

She said: “I’m very pleased to support this brilliant scheme. The money will support a large number of people who want to take part in a variety of sports.”

The council has allocated £500,000 to support sporting organisations over the next three years.
