The leader of Kirklees Council made the shock announcement on Twitter on Monday evening that he was no longer in the position.

Clr David Sheard tweeted: "I am no longer Leader of Kirklees Council."

The Heckmondwike councillor was voted out of the position by his own party on Monday evening, and added he respected the decision.

He also tweeted: "What really surprises me is how well so many people could lie within hours of the Group Meeting."

Speaking to the Examiner, Clr Sheard said: "I am sad to be standing down although it is a weight off my shoulders.

"The Council has some tough times and decisions to be made ahead.

"I will have a few days to gather my things then I am looking forward to having more time.

"I recently injured myself but I am looking forward to getting back into cycling."

The position will be taken over by Clr Shabir Pandor, councillor for Batley West, while Clr Jean Calvert is to continue as Deputy Leader.

Clr Sheard added: "It is a decision that was tough to make but one that I respect."
