KIRKLEES residents say they are becoming happier about services given by the local council.

Ratings for many services, including cleanliness, planning, sports and leisure facilities, libraries, waste collection and recycling, have shot up.

The findings were part of an independent survey of 5,000 Kirklees residents to show how the public rate their local authority across the country.

The latest poll shows:

* Satisfaction with the cleanliness of the area is at 63% - up from 51% on the last survey three years ago.

* Four out of five people are satisfied with household waste collection.

* 58% are happy with sports and leisure facilities - up from 56%.

* 73% of residents are satisfied with libraries, a rise from the previous figure of 66%.

* Just under half the residents surveyed are happy with museums and galleries.

* 69% are pleased with parks and open spaces - up from 65%.

Clr Robert Light, the Tory leader of the council, said: "We strive to provide top quality in all our services and inspections such as this give the council a message on what the people think, how we are doing, and where we need to improve.

"We will never get everything 100% right, but what we seek to do is provide the best possible service we can and always look for every opportunity to improve efficiency."
