COUNCILLORS will today move to start the shutdown of a Mirfield school.

But they are likely to run into a storm of protest from parents of students at Castle Hall School.

The controversial plan – part of the £200m revamp of schools across Kirklees – follows many meetings and protests.

The council will publish the Statutory Notice to close the school. They want to expand Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form Centre.

Those who have opposed the closure plan will have six more weeks in which to submit their concerns before a final decision is taken in the summer by the council’s Cabinet.

Hundreds of people are expected to descend on the school later today to stage a noisy but peaceful protest.

Local families fighting to save Castle Hall will stage a "Hands Around The School" demonstration to show their disgust at the plans.

"We will take this fight all the way", said Alan Wilkinson, one of the protest leaders.

Council officials argue that the new plans will offer better education for all.

They believe the proposals for Mirfield will see the new Free Grammar School equipped with the latest and best facilities for the future.
