Plans to introduce the Living Wage for Kirklees Council staff are still being explored.

The Living Wage Foundation say people should be employed on a hourly pre-tax rate calculated according to the basic cost of living.

That is currently £7.85 as a minimum compared to £6.50 for the National Minimum Wage for over 21s.

Clr David Sheard, Kirklees Council leader, said: “We are still working towards it.

“There are a few problems we need to sort out. We don’t control all of the wage budget for some of our employees – some in schools, for example – so we’re looking at how it can be done.

“There are also problems with, for example, part time workers who get some benefits.

“We need to make sure what we do doesn’t put at risk how a person receives benefits.

“We have set aside some money in the budget for it, we are committed to doing it, we’ve got to sort out the problems so we get it right for individuals.”

Kirklees has included £1.4m in the draft budget plans for 2015/16, which indicates it could be introduced from April next year.
