If you’re heading to the tip tomorrow you may have to drive past a picket line.

Workers at Kirklees Council’s five waste and recycling centres are striking in a row over pay.

Kirklees Council has confirmed the industrial action will not involve bin collection workers but has admitted some minor disruption may occur.

The strikes are being held by members of Unite union who are in a pay dispute with Suez which runs the council’s five waste and recycling sites.

A walk-out is scheduled for Wednesday, between 6am and 6pm.

French-owned Suez has said it will bring in strike-busting staff to keep the tips open.

The action will involve all the facilities that Suez operate including the tips at Emerald Street in Huddersfield, Bent Ley Lane at Meltham , Bromley Farm at Upper Cumberworth , Weaving Lane at Dewsbury and Nab Lane, Birstall. The Energy from Waste facility on Vine Street, Huddersfield will also be affected.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “Arrangements have been made with Suez to ensure that all aspects of the waste disposal process can continue.

“Kirklees council staff are not involved in this dispute and the refuse collection teams will still be emptying bins.

“However the council is warning that, whilst they will be working hard to ensure service continues as normal, there is a possibility of some disruption which may result in late collections and some bins not being emptied as planned.

“Any bins that are missed due to the disruption will be emptied as soon as possible after the strike.”
