A FIRM collecting old clothes from textile recycling bins in Huddersfield has gone out of business.

Now Kirklees Council has been urged to find a replacement for Batley-based Ecotex Ltd, which provided recycling bins at six sites across the district.

Lindley resident Ken Winter said he rang the council after discovering the textile recycling bin at Lidget Street near his home was full to overflowing.

A council officer told him the company collecting waste from the bin had ceased trading.

Mr Winter said: “The least Kirklees could have done is to put up a notice asking people not to leave more things there and advising them what to do instead.

“The bin was full and there were items all over the ground.

“It looked like rain, so I took some of the bags of clothing to the Forget Me Not charity shop.”

Mr Winter said the collapse of the company seemed to be “a sign of the times” following the council’s recent decision to end household glass collections.

He said he hoped the council could reinstate the clothing bank as soon as possible – or that people would donate unwanted items to charity shops.

“Some people will seek alternative textile banks,” he said. “But a lot of people may simply throw their old clothes away.”

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “Ecotex, who provide the textile bank at Lidget Street and five other sites, have gone out of business and their banks will be removed.

“Ecotex were just one of several providers of textile bins, but Lidget Street is the only site which only had one bin.

“Alternative sites can be found via the council’s website at http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/community/yourproperty/wasteRecycling.aspx .
