Kirklees Council is setting £2.8m aside to turn key buildings into homes.

And some of the cash will be spent on developing parts of Huddersfield town centre that have been empty for 13 years.

Kirklees Cabinet members will review the business cases for Waverley Chambers at Kirkgate and Estate Buildings at Railway Street, as well as Pioneer House Annex in Dewsbury. Plans show work to the three buildings would provide 27 homes.

The council says: “All three council-owned buildings are listed and in a conservation area.

“They are currently standing empty and bringing them back into use as residential accommodation through the Empty Clusters Project will provide investment and preservation of important town centre buildings.”

The report adds they will bring much needed affordable council homes to rent and increased footfall and spend for the town centres and nearby businesses.

It adds: “The council buildings are currently standing empty. There is a cost associated with maintaining them in their current state and they are at risk of further deterioration and potential security and vandalism risk.”

Kirklees has focused its housing plans on buildings with “important economic and heritage development opportunities”.

Part of the Estate Buildings earmarked for development has been empty for 13 years.

The upper area will be converted into 15 one-bed flats which will be added to the council housing stock.

Areas of the buildings which are in use are unaffected by the plans, which are subjected to a pending planning application.

The Examiner has already reported that Kirklees applied for a change of use consent for Waverley Chambers to create six flats on the upper levels for social housing.

The building, empty for three years, was former council offices.

Pioneer House Annex in Dewsbury will provide six one-bed apartments and planning permission has already been granted.

The £2.8m will fund 125 homes overall through a mix of using council building and private properties.

Details of how much each conversion will cost is confidential as tenders will be required.
