The number of arson cases, road accidents and house fires in Kirklees have fallen dramatically, according to official fire service figures.

Arson attacks in Kirklees fell by more than half from 1,765 in 2009/10 to 770 in 2014/15, according to statistics released by West Yorkshire Fire Service (WYFS).

In the same period, domestic fires dropped from 265 to 176 while road traffic collisions decreased from 192 to 100.

Numbers of rescues, non-domestic building fires, fire-related injuries and false alarms – accidental and malicious – also decreased.

WYFS Kirklees District celebrated a clean sweep meeting and exceeding its targets for 2014/15.

But a WYFS spokesperson said there was no room for complacency against a background of cuts.

The spokesperson said: “2014/15 has been another successful year for performance measures across Kirklees.

“The annual targets will become very challenging in 2015/16 and we must continue to find more creative ways of reducing risk with the backdrop of diminishing resources.

“By deploying our resources efficiently and effectively, we will see the greatest impact on reducing risk.

“The 2015/16 District Action Plan details how we aim to continue to work alongside partners to reduce the risk and improve the lives of people living and working in Kirklees.”

WYFS Calderdale District also performed well with significantly fewer arsons, domestic fires and road accidents in 2014/15 compared to 2009/10.

Arsons fell from 830 to 492, road accidents dropped from 127 to 63 and domestic fires fell from 150 to 112.

A WYFS spokesperson said: “Calderdale continues to perform strongly against its service delivery targets.

“The district has worked extremely hard to meet the 2014/15 targets.

“The 2015/16 service delivery targets are even more demanding and provide very little flexibility for under-performance.

“The economic climate, changes in demographics, and growth in unoccupied buildings continue to present challenges to the district team.”

But Calderdale WYFS failed to meet its target on reducing fire-related injuries, despite reducing the overall number from 22 to 19.

A WYFS spokesperson said: “For the second year running, Calderdale District has failed to meet the target set for fire related injuries.

“In 2014/15, performance fell short of the required target by 18.8% (four-injuries)...

“Post fire initiatives following such incidents include delivering a sustained programme of home safety checks.”
