A public meeting will be held about plans to fast-track the downgrade of Dewsbury A&E.

North Kirklees MPs Paula Sherriff and Jo Cox are to host the event following concerns about the plans to focus emergency care at Pinderfields.

Earlier this year Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust said it wanted to bring forward the controversial plan and scale back Dewsbury’s emergency department by the end of this summer, nine months earlier than planned.

There is concern at the move as it comes alongside controversial proposals to shift emergency services from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to Calderdale.

That would leave Kirklees without full A&E services.

The meeting will also see changes to maternity services discussed.

Dewsbury MP Ms Sherriff has also secured an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on Monday evening to raise concerns about staffing levels at the hospital.

She said: “Our concerns stem from the information that we, as MPs, receive from patients with complaints, anecdotal information, internal whistle-blowers and formal accounts.

“These suggest to us that there are some serious problems both within and affecting the trust.

“It is imperative we get to the bottom of them.”

Batley and Spen MP Mrs Cox said: “We continue to have serious concerns about the way the trust is running our hospital. We are determined to use every avenue available to us here and in Parliament to continue the fight for DDH and make sure those concerns, and the concerns of local people, are addressed.”

The date and location of the public meeting is yet to be announced.
