SMALL firms and voluntary groups have been urged to apply for business rate relief.

Under the business rate rules, small firms can claim mandatory relief and potentially reduce their bill by up to 100% on a sliding scale.

In addition, charities and community amateur sports clubs can apply for mandatory rate relief and potentially qualify for 80% relief.

Non-profit organisations promoting social welfare – including promoting education, sports, literature, arts, recreation and science – can apply for discretionary relief of up to a 100% reduction in rates.

Kirklees Lib Dem councillor Tony Woodhead urged small firms and qualifying organisations to apply.

He said the council was conducting a review of all of the organisations and groups that currently claim relief.

“These are difficult times and I am certain that a helping hand would be greatly appreciated by many sports clubs, community organisations and small businesses,” said Clr Woodhead.

“I am bringing this to their attention as it is support that they are entitled to and should claim. But the only way for them to benefit is to apply.”
