Kirklees Council have revealed more details of their proposals to create new primary school places at Royds Hall High School.

Due to the growing demand for primary school places in western Huddersfield, it is proposed to extend the age range of Royds Hall and create an ‘all-through’ school that caters for children aged from four to 16.

Royds Hall is currently attended by 11 to 16-year-olds. The proposal is to create primary places for reception class children upwards.

They would complement existing provision in the area and would be in addition to the places already available in other schools.

If the changes were agreed, there would be new facilities built at the current Royds Hall facilities in Luck Lane, Paddock.

The proposal is to build up the primary places in stages, starting with a 30-place reception class. These children would move through the school and a new, 30-place reception class would be added each year.

Over seven years, full primary provision of reception through to Year 6 would be created – a total of 210 places. Royds Hall would also retain its current number of 860 secondary places. It is proposed that the first reception class would start in September 2014, but all dates are subject to change.

A report to Kirklees Cabinet states that similar all-through schools have been created across the country, using the space available at high school sites to meet the need for extra primary places.
