A KNIFEMAN cut another man before locking himself in a flat, setting it alight and jumping from a window.

The incident took place in a first floor flat at Wakefield Road, at the junction with Smithy Lane, Moldgreen at around 5pm yesterday.

It is thought the injured man, also believed to be in his 30s, called the police before fleeing the property.

The blaze, which caused considerable damage to the flat, was extinguished by fire crews from Huddersfield and Slaithwaite.

Armed police also attended.

Police last night arrested a man on suspicion of assault and arson with intent to endanger life.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We received a call saying a man armed with a knife at an address on Wakefield Road had been threatening him.

“When Armed Response got there the caller was outside but the armed suspect was still inside.

“He jumped from the window while the address was on fire.

“He was arrested on suspicion of assault and arson with intent to endanger life and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.”
