A man has been jailed for eight years after he cut another on the head with a knife while having a psychotic episode fuelled by drink and drugs.

Leeds Crown Court heard victim Manzoor Hassan was visiting a house in North Street, Huddersfield, on June 22 last year when in the early hours of the morning he heard banging and shouting at the door.

Two men entered the flat. One of them Dilbir Singh was wearing a bandana over part of his face while the other Anthony Robert Fuery was wearing a plastic Iron Man mask.

Andrew Stranex said Mr Hassan “tried to make himself scarce by going into the bathroom” but realised the pair knew where he was. When he then tried to get to the front door Singh spoke to him and he recognised his voice.

Fuery had picked up a hammer while Singh was holding a large knife with a serrated blade and Singh demanded: “Where are my girlfriend and son.”

When he realised he had been recognised Singh removed the bandana and kept repeating his question. He then went to Mr Hassan and assaulted him using the knife on the top of his head, cutting him three times.

Mr Stranex said Singh had also tried to use other items to strike Mr Hassan before he went back into the living room and Mr Hassan took the opportunity to escape.

Nicholas de la Poer representing Singh said he was acting out of character at the time because a psychiatrist assessed he was suffering a psychotic episode.

“He had a lessened grip on reality and was hearing voices, his perception of events was distorted.”

He said his normal personality had been affected by drink and drugs he had taken. Since then he had undergone treatment and de-toxified. He was now once again lucid and able to speak with insight.

Adam Birkby for Fuery said he anticipated there would be a confrontation but not anything more. They had not taken the weapons to the scene but picked them up at the flat and he had not used the hammer to threaten anyone.

Singh, 41 of Manor House, Moorside Avenue, Huddersfield admitted wounding with intent and possessing an offensive weapon. He was jailed for eight years.

Fuery, 34 of Weymouth Avenue, Oakes, Huddersfield admitted having an offensive weapon and was jailed for 12 months.
