Knife thug Konnor Mason has been jailed for robbing a takeaway man.

Leeds Crown Court heard after an order was placed by phone in the early hours of November 5 last year, Ans Jamal and Mohammed Javed went to Longfield Avenue, Dalton, to deliver it.

Robert Galley, prosecuting, said at first they were given one address which was not correct and when they called the number which had placed the order, they were directed to another address.

They parked up and by chance Mr Jamal had a separate order to take to a neighbour near that address. He had delivered that first and then became aware of Mason in front of him on the path.

Mason asked for a cigarette and when Mr Jamal said he did not smoke Mason demanded the order saying: “Otherwise I’ll shank you.” Mr Galley said it was then Mr Jamal noticed Mason was holding a knife which was four to five inches long with a jagged edge.

“He froze and didn’t want to get hurt so he handed the food and drink worth £40 over, but the defendant then demanded “give me all your money.”

He then passed over around £100 in cash and was emptying his pockets of change when Mason then told him to hand over his phone.

Mr Galley said Mr Jamal was reaching for his phone as Mason handed the food to a woman nearby, but was not quick enough for Mason who lost patience with him and punched him to the head a few times.

The man who had earlier received his order also went out to investigate, he had a small truncheon and struck Mason with it and restrained him against a wall until police arrived. Mr Jamal had bruising and swelling to the left side of this face, sore ribs and bruised elbows.

The court heard Mason received 30 months in a young offender institution in 2012 for two offences of robbery.

Mohammed Rafiq, representing him, said he realised he would be receiving a jail term. His time on remand had not been pleasant - he had been slashed on his back with a knife while inside and “prison is not somewhere he wants to be.”

He said a “cocktail of drink and drugs” was responsible for his offending that night. “He knows he was foolish and has been an idiot but he cannot turn the clock back.”

Mason, 22 of Glenfield Avenue, Deighton, admitted robbery. Jailing him for four and a half years Recorder Michael Slater said it was a serious offence of its type.
