It can get pretty hot in the kitchen at Krispy Cod fish and chip restaurant in Huddersfield town centre.

But things got even hotter during rush hour on Wednesday when a car burst into flames right outside the Westgate eatery.

Owner Mudassar Ramzan, 28, was frying fish in the back while his brother Muzzamal Amin was serving a shop full of hungry customers.

Muzzamal, 24, saw smoke and flames billowing from the X series Jaguar at around 5pm and shouted to his brother.

Without hesitating, Mudassar grabbed the fire extinguisher from the kitchen and ran outside to tackle the fire.

The car’s owner opened the bonnet and flames shot out. Crowds of people watched as Mudassar calmly extinguished the fire.

The fire brigade was on the scene within three or four minutes but by then the modest hero had already returned to frying fish.

He said afterwards: “It was quite dramatic and could have been very dangerous if the car had exploded.

“It was rush hour and there were a lot of people around on the streets and at the bus stop, as well as lots of shops and businesses nearby.

“I didn’t think. I just grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran into the street. There were loads of people and the engine was on fire.

“At first it was a lot of smoke and small flames but when the owner opened the bonnet, big flames came out. I managed to put it out pretty quickly.

“Later on my mates found out and were quite shocked. They thought I was really brave.”
