ELLAND Labour Party members have selected former Calderdale councillor Stewart Brown to fight the Elland Ward in the May 1 Calderdale Council elections.
Mr Brown has been a town councillor in Hebden Bridge for 12 years and has degrees in environmental science and local sustainable development.
He is an environmental health officer by profession with more than 20 years experience in local government housing, planning and environmental health departments.
As a Calderdale councillor for Calder Valley until 2000, Clr Brown introduced Calderdale’s first recycling plan and launched the Calder Future campaign to clean up the River Calder.
He was also involved in many environmental, regeneration and community initiatives.
He represented Calderdale on regional and national bodies for rural, environmental and planning issues.
He said: “We need to restore some pride in Elland, introduce some new ideas and new energy and get the town punching above its weight.
“Based on the canvassing the Labour team has done already there is obviously a general feeling among people that the town has been getting a raw deal from Calderdale for a number of years.”
