THE Labour Party has begun its fight for votes in next month's local election.

Kirklees Labour leader Clr Mehboob Khan has officially launched the party's manifesto.

The main issues Labour believe are important in Kirklees include more police on the streets, extra investment in schools and cleaner streets.

Clr Khan said: "I think our manifesto sets out clearly why we are the party people should put their trust in us next month.

"I think a lot of people have decided it is time for a change in Kirklees and we are the party to bring that about most successfully.

"People must remember things like the charges for the removal of bulky items and the proposed closure of old people's homes - we fought and won on these issues."

Clr Khan stressed the importance of people using their vote wisely. He believes the new system of postal voting will see an increase in the number of voters.

"There is a danger that people will vote in a local election as a protest," he said.

"With the far right BNP standing in a lot of areas this is not the thing to do.

"I also think people should vote on the local issues rather than national ones.

"Hopefully people will remember the good we have done and listen to what we are promising to do."
