DEVELOPERS want to build 61 homes in Slaithwaite.

Silentway Developments have earmarked land between Hawthorn Road and Meadow Lane for the estate.

Seven objections, supported by Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford, have been lodged to the Kirklees Council's Planning Committee.

The committee meets on Thursday and is expected to call for a site visit.

Loss of views, privacy and countryside as well as traffic concerns and issues over flooding and drainage have all been highlighted by those opposed to the scheme.

Opponents say watercourses in the hillside render landslides likely.

The area is said to contain a number of springs and residents are worried about the impact of disturbing them.

The site stretches along the northern edge of Slaithwaite Cricket and Bowling Club.

Currently used for grazing cattle, the area slopes steeply, making any building work more difficult.

Nine houses are being built close by.

Although the area is considered to be greenfield, an existing application for 83 homes was approved in 1993 and could still be carried out.

In their report to planning committee members, officers suggest the smaller application is preferable to the present permission.
