Demolition work has finally begun on what was one of Huddersfield’s best-known pubs.

The Grey Horse in Birchencliffe will be levelled and a Tesco convenience store built in its place.

It is understood the demolition company has been instructed to carry out the work by October 14.

Site owner, Huddersfield businessman Bal Khela, said he hoped work on building the Tesco store would start soon in readiness for the Tour de France event next year, which will sweep past the site.

The pub was much loved in its heyday, but had struggled in recent years and has been derelict for some time.

It was briefly owned by Huddersfield’s longest serving landlord and businessman Nigel Saxton, who will clock up 25 years at The Croppers, Marsh, in November.
