A HUDDERSFIELD artist has created a series of short films based around domestic violence.

In a special preview at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Beverley Addy exhibited her exploration of abusive relationships.

And now they are to be screened at pubs and clubs across Huddersfield.

After receiving funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England, she undertook three years of research and conducted workshops with the town’s domestic violence service, strangers, friends and family across the country.

The ex-Examiner journalist said: “The films look at many different aspects of abuse from mental and emotional to the most extreme violence.

“Although I was inspired mainly by the experiences of women who had suffered physical abuse at the hands of a male partner, I believe anyone who has ever felt lost, trapped or abused in any way within a relationship will be able to relate to the underlying themes wrapped into these unusual films because physical abuse does not come without an emotional or mental element.”

The films are a collection of text only, abstract imagery and narrative films each with an original soundtrack created by Media Sounds of Milnsbridge.

The entire collection, entitled Lives, was shown on the cinema screen in the main auditorium at the Lawrence Batley Theatre to a large audience.

They can be seen for free at many pubs and venues across Huddersfield from March 8 – International Women’s Day.

These include The Head of Steam, The Parish and The Rat and Ratchet in the town centre.

They will screen the films every afternoon and evening between March 8 to Sunday March 11.

The Rose and Crown, Cop Hill, will be screening the full series of films every hour.

They are only suitable for over-16s due to strong language and verbal descriptions of violence.

Limited looped versions of the films without strong language or graphic descriptions will be shown at venues where there is unrestricted access for the public.

Beverley, who is artist-in-residence at the Laurence Batley Theatre, has warned that the subject matter of all films is challenging.
