GOOD leadership is the reason for improvements at a school for excluded or ill children.

Westfields Pupil Referral Unit, Batley Field Hill, Batley, has just been graded as Good (2) by Ofsted inspectors. Its previous rating was Satisfactory (3)

Inspectors attributed the school’s success to its leaders, stating: “As the result of good leadership and management, including that of the management committee, the centre has made good improvement in all aspects of its work since the previous inspection.”

They also said that pupils’ achievement and behaviour was good and their attendance improved.

The inspectors added: “High quality work with staff in all the authority’s secondary schools has enabled a significant number of pupils to stay in their local school, as well as reducing the rate of permanent exclusion within the authority.”

The unit caters for 36 boys and girls between 11 and 14 who have either been excluded or who are unable to attend mainstream schools.
