Two stab victims were given vital first-aid as they staggered out of a car, pouring with blood.

Seconds earlier the victims – who are believed to be father and son – had suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack alongside a main road in Huddersfield.

Last night, both were in hospital as detectives launched a major investigation.

Parts of the busy Leeds Road and St Andrew’s Road were sealed off as forensics experts combed the area.

The drama was revealed by workmen who were fixing electric cables down a trench on Leeds Road when they were alerted to the pair when their vehicle stopped abruptly.

The younger stab victim – a man in his 20s – was himself on the phone calling an ambulance.

Eye-witness Matthew Stringer, 34, said: “I looked up and there was a younger guy and an older guy.

“The younger one was covered in blood and it was pouring out all over the pavement.

“He lifted up his T-shirt and you could see his innards hanging out.

“I ran to get the first-aid kit from the van. He was himself on the phone to the ambulance.

“I don’t think he realised how bad his wounds were until he lifted up his T-shirt.

“A nurse came from nearby and she was helping the younger one and I helped the older one.

“He had two stab wounds either side of his chest and was struggling to breathe.

“I put some gauze on his wounds and put pressure on them until the paramedics arrived.”

Matthew’s colleague Liam Johnson, 25, also assisted in helping the ambulance get to the scene by directing the traffic.

He added: “It’s not what you expect to see, two guys covered in blood staggering out of a car.

“At first I thought it was odd the way the car stopped and then the younger one walked towards us and lifted up his T-shirt saying he’d been stabbed. We could see the wound and looked like his intestines were hanging out.”

Another man, James Broadbent, saw the aftermath of the attack.

He said: “There were lots of police vehicles and officers all over the place and they had cordoned off two stretches on either side of Leeds Road”

Police sealed off two stretches of the road, close to the junction with Bradley Mills Road, leading to the John Smith’s Stadium. A police
cordon was erected outside a
carpets firm at the junction with St Andrew’s Road and outside a house on the opposite side of the road.

A number of police officers and forensics experts were called to the scene.

Det Insp Ian Thornes, of Huddersfield CID, said: “We were called shortly after 1.30pm to reports of a number of people armed with weapons in Leeds Road, Huddersfield, with at least one person having been injured.

“Officers and paramedics attended and found one man aged 44 and another aged 23 with stab wounds.

“Both were taken to hospital for treatment. The 44-year-old was described as having serious injuries while the younger man’s injuries were not as serious and not believed life threatening.

“We are currently investigating the circumstances of precisely what took place and are speaking to witnesses.

“We do believe this was an isolated incident and would like to speak with anyone who has information. Anyone who can assist should speak to Huddersfield Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
