SOCCER legend Denis Law said today he was beating prostate cancer.
The ex-Scotland, Manchester United and Huddersfield striker underwent surgery last month.
The operation was a success and the 63-year-old has since been recovering at his Cheshire home.
Law, a former European Footballer of the Year, said the cancer was detected early and urged men to check themselves regularly.
He said: "I noticed a small lump and at first I thought it might be a recurrence of a double hernia I had.
"But I went to see my GP and some tests were done and I was told it was prostate cancer, which was shocking.
"They operated and now I'm making a full recovery, mainly because the cancer was caught early.
"I would say it is essential for men to be vigilant and to check themselves regularly."
Law also praised his family, medical staff and well-wishers who sent messages of support.
He said: "The doctors and nurses were marvellous and I would like to thank them.
"My family have also been very supportive and the get-well messages people sent were touching. Everyone has been fantastic."
