BOSSES at British Waterways are looking at a request to hand over land in Mirfield for leisure use.

Tory Martyn Bolt has made the plea over a site next to West Mills playing fields at Battyeford.

He said the site, which is alongside the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal, could be used for disabled angling and canoeing.

"I look forward to the reply from British Waterways and to hopefully persuading them that the land could be better used," said Clr Bolt.

The playing field was at the centre of a recent battle when bedding firm John Cotton asked if it could be used for industrial expansion.

Kirklees chiefs eventually said it should be kept for sport.
