TWO Huddersfield walkers will be following in the footsteps of the Romans when they take part in a fundraising challenge.
Barry Snarr and Rob Stewart will raise more than £2,000 for the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust when they follow the historic Hadrian’s Wall as part of a coast-to-coast walk.
The pair – who have a combined age of 103 – are planning to complete the 87-mile trek in four-and a half-days. It normally takes six days.
They will start their route on August 2 at Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast and follow the wall to where it finishes at Wallsend, Newcastle.
Barry, of Scapegoat Hill, said he is looking forward to the challenge.
He said: “This is something I have always wanted to do, walking coast to coast. But I’ve never really got around to it.
“We say we have been training hard, but we haven’t done as much as we should have done.
“We’ve been doing three miles a day to get our joints going.
“But it’s creaking bones that I’m worried about!”
The pair have already beaten their £2,000 fundraising target.
Barry is a national sales manager for Huddersfield maintenance company UK Response.
Rob is a Holmfirth sales and marketing director.
Both have approached business contacts for sponsorship.
Barry said: “We are going to bust our target.
“The majority of the money has come from companies we deal with on a day-to-day basis.
“They have been so generous.”
The trust will use the money to help build a children’s hospice and respite centre in Brackenhall.
Planning permission has just been given for the development to go ahead on land off Fell Greave Road.
But the trust has to raise £3m before work can start on the site.
Fundraising manager Mandy Barwick said: “We never cease to be amazed at the lengths people go to on our behalf.
“Clearly both Barry and Rob are pushing themselves to their physical limits by attempting to complete the challenge in such a short time.
“But they are determined, not only to succeed but to raise a substantial amount of sponsorship along the way.
“I would like send my personal thanks to both of them.”
