A health watchdog wants to hear what’s right about the NHS as well as its shortcomings.

NHS watchdog Healthwatch Kirklees has urged patients to be more active in feeding back their positive experiences of the NHS in Kirklees.

Director Rory Deighton said: “We need to be careful as patients, that we properly reflect our experiences when using GPs, hospitals and care services in Kirklees. We’ve heard from patients who are sick of hearing in the media that the NHS is a mess, when every day they receive great diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.”

“If you look at online feedback mechanisms like NHS Choices or Patient Opinion there is roughly a 50-50 balance between positive and negative comments.

“Healthwatch Kirklees experience is that the vast majority of patients receive excellent care from committed and caring professionals.

“We all have a responsibility as patients to properly feedback what is good about our treatment, as much as what is bad about the services we use.”

Mr Deighton said that patients were keen to separate genuine criticism about certain aspects of services, from a general “NHS bashing” culture that many felt was developed in some parts of the media.

“We need to balance the criticism with the positive. Every day, patients in Kirklees get great treatment from thousands of committed professionals.”
