TWO councillors have backed a call for hospital bosses to make a contribution to Lindley residents’ parking permit costs.

Lib Dem councillors Cahal Burke and Christine Stanfield want Huddersfield Royal Infirmary officials to help motorists living on 11 streets surrounding the hospital who must pay £30 a year to park outside their own homes.

A petition has been sent in to Kirklees Council.

Clr Stanfield said: “A contribution of even one permit per house of those affected would make an enormous difference to all households and would still be less than 10% of monies collected on an annual basis from parking charges at the HRI.

“I feel that if this was agreed, the many elderly and infirm residents who depend on regular daily help to live independently would be less worried. “The provision of a visitor’s permit would be invaluable for use by carers and others visitors.”

Lindley Tory, Clr Tony Brice, has opposed the move and said there was no chance of the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Hospitals Trust paying tens of thousands towards residents’ fees.
