A Newsome pub has been granted a licence in a former working men’s club.

Graham Davies, manager of The Newsome Tap on St John’s Avenue, now hopes to open the ‘family’ pub this month following his success at a Kirklees Council licensing panel in Huddersfield Town Hall.

Mr Davies said that the pub would be run differently to when it was operating as the Newsome Working Men’s Club, which shut due to financial problems in January 2014.

Opening hours will be from noon to 11.30pm on Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, with alcohol sales stopping half an hour before.

It is the latest venture for Mr Davies, who has run dozens of pubs throughout Yorkshire and used to work at the Postcard Inn. He will run it with Kathryn Riley under company Newsome Wmc Limited.

He told councillors: “Our opening hours are very reasonable and no one will be drinking outside after 10pm.

“In all my time running pubs I’ve never tolerated offensive behaviour or bad language.

“We also want to play music and have occasional live bands and have carried out work to reduce the noise.

“We played the music at full volume and couldn’t hear a thing at the front and now at the back thanks to blackout curtains.

“We also hope to have bingo and quiz nights.”

Councillors Ken Smith, Amanda Pinnock, David Ridgway and Jenny Bryce-Chan decided to approve the licence.

Mr Davies said: “We’re very pleased. We are looking to open on July 10 but may delay it until July 17, when we will be holding a big opening and charity event for the Candlelighters charity.

“Actor Bruce Jones, who played Les Battersby, has been confirmed to come down and we’ll have a Stars in Their Eyes Robbie Williams singer providing entertainment.

The news comes not long after the owner of the building submitted plans to build seven houses on land at the back currently used as a bowling green by Newsome Community Sports and Bowling club.

Mr Davies said: “We have been informed by the owner there will be parking space for the pub where the bowling green is now by October."
