Delayed building work on a supermarket is set to start in February.

Work to build a Lidl supermarket on Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, will begin on February 10, according to the budget supermarket chain.

Lidl confirmed the date in a letter to Colne Valley MP, Jason McCartney.

Building work has been delayed because of problems with the foundations of the site and a culvert which ran through the site.

The opening date for the store was postponed until summer 2014, Lidl said in October.

But according to Mr McCartney rumours had been circulating around Holmfirth as to whether the store would ever be built.

Mr McCartney said: “There have been a lot of rumours in town that it isn’t going to happen but I have been told by Adrienne Forrest, acquisitions manager for Lidl, that construction was to start on February 10.

“A lot of people have been asking me if it’s going to happen. Obviously things can change.

“My role as an MP is to encourage companies to give as much information as possible and it’s something people have been asking me about all the time.” Holme Valley has become a battle ground for supermarket chains including Tesco, Sainsbury’sand Morrisons, all of whom hope to open new stores in the area.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that three major supermarket giants are bidding to go head-to-head for land in the town centre.

Holmfirth Cricket Club and Holmfirth Bowling Club – which adjoins the site of the Lidl development – are ready to listen to offers of around £4 million for their neighbouring sites.

Just three months after Tesco lost a public inquiry to build a new store, the retail giant is back for more.

The Examiner understands, however, that it was rival Sainsbury’s which first targeted the cricket and bowling fields with a speculative enquiry.

That sparked a potential bidding war with Tesco and a third supermarket chain Asda joining the fray.

Three development companies have also weighed in, but key to any deal will be relocation in the town for the two sports clubs.
