CHRISTMAS lights organised by volunteer groups are to get extra help from Kirklees Council.
A report about the council's future involvement in providing lights has been endorsed by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
The suggestions come from an ad hoc scrutiny panel set up to look into the council's role in the provision of festive lights and decorations and the support it provides to organising bodies within the community who arrange such displays.
The report's recommendations include:
* Establishing a festive lights co-ordinator to provide information, advice and support to organising bodies
* To commission the council's Highways and Transportation Service to erect and dismantle festive lights displays so that organising bodies do not have to arrange this individually.
* Improving the way grants are administered
* The council taking on some of the liability associated with festive lights displays supported through council grants.
Clr Nigel Patrick, chair of the ad hoc panel, said: "This is a thorough and comprehensive piece of work and I am sure the recommendations will be warmly welcomed by those across Kirklees who organise Christmas lights, without whose dedication and hard work these displays wouldn't happen.
"I'm glad that the cabinet members will be responding to the issues raised after the elections."
