A HUDDERSFIELD street's new lights could rid it of the menace of drug-dealers, it was claimed today.

Six lamp-posts with a stronger light are being put up at Wentworth Street, Springwood.

Kirklees councillor Linda Wild said it could force the dealers to take to their heels.

She said: "There's been a lot of drug- dealing there because it's so dark.

"One of the new lights is already up and the difference it has made is unbelievable."

Old columns with yellow lights are being replaced with white lighting.

Clr Wild said tests elsewhere had shown white light could dramatically reduce crime.

"I'm really excited that this has been able to go ahead," she said.
