THE doors to one Huddersfield’s most historic houses have been opened wide – for the second time in its rich history.

Briar Court in Lindley was open to the public at the weekend allowing visitors a glimpse of stunning architecture designed by Edgar Wood, who is perhaps best known for his work on the distinctive Lindley Clock Tower.

The house, situated on Occupation Road, was completed in 1896 and still includes decorated ceilings, an inglenook fireplace and a plaster frieze.

It was built as a home for newly-weds Annie Wood, Edgar’s sister, and Herbert Sykes, the son of John Sykes, who owned Acre Mills, Lindley.

The property, which was acquired by the Huddersfield Corporation in 1946, has been used for several purposes including a children’s home.

The open day was organised by The Edgar Wood Heritage Group who also put together an exhibition featuring other Yorkshire buildings designed by the architect.
