A man stole perfume to buy heroin because he thought that he was going to be arrested, a court heard.

Rao Khan, 38, admitted to the theft from TK Maxx in the Kingsgate Shopping Centre on June 16.

Carl Kingsley, mitigating, said that his client still had an addiction to heroin and crack cocaine.

He told Kirklees magistrates that on the day Khan, of Union Street in Lindley , had been thrown out following a row with his wife.

Leaving the house put him in breach of his curfew, the court was told.

Mr Kingsley explained: “So he went to TK Maxx and stole something to buy heroin.

“He thought he’d be arrested and so thought why not?”

Magistrates ordered a report from probation staff before sentencing Khan, possibly to drug treatment.
