Developers working on a second new housing site in Lindley have vowed to ‘minimise disruption’ after a similar project nearby was halted following dozens of complaints from residents.

Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire has been given the green light by Kirklees Council to begin construction on the site off Crosland Road, with 30 homes scheduled to be built.

It is close to the site of the first development, where Harron Homes has been stopped from working after numerous complaints about the road being caked in mud, drainage issues, and access and traffic congestion on surrounding routes at peak times.

Kirklees Council served a temporary stop notice on Harron Homes earlier this month, which means no more construction work can take place at the site off Crosland Road, for 28 days.

The work is halted until improvements, including a temporary drainage scheme, have been made.

Residents have since complained about metal sheets which have been placed on the road which they say are making driving conditions difficult.

And local councillor Gemma Wilson said she will be monitoring the situation.

“The council has met with Harron Homes and are negotiating with them and they are looking to get back on site as soon as possible.

“They are working on the drainage, but there have been more complaints about the metal plates in the road which residents say are making it difficult. I will be keeping a close eye on the situation, as the residents have suffered enough.”

Harron Homes has said it “regrets” the council decision and has had to lay off some construction staff in the run up to Christmas as a result.

It says it is working with the council to resolve the issues, and the metal sheeting is part of work to improve drainage.

A spokesperson said: “The metal sheets on the road at our Farriers Croft development in Lindley are required and approved as part of the water management strategy and follow highways standards.”

Farriers Croft is just the start of large scale work on Lindley Moor, where dozens of new homes and industrial units will be built on green fields.

Now, Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire has started work on a development which will be known as Crosland Meadows.

Wayne Gradwell, managing director at Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “We can confirm we are in the early stage of construction at our Lindley site and, as a responsible housebuilder, we always strive to minimise disruption to the areas in which we build.

“Our Crosland Meadows development will feature a selection of 30 two, three and four bedroom homes and we are currently working towards our sales team being on site from the middle of January.

“We are currently encouraging customers to register their interest so we can keep them up-to-date with the site’s progress.”
