PARENTS blocked the road outside a Huddersfield school in a protest against dangerous parkers.

The group barricaded George Street outside Lindley Junior and Infant School to stop parents driving down it.

Some parents who were running late to pick up their children attempted to get through but were stopped by the angry crowd.

One of those taking part was Deborah Hulley, who was knocked over by a driver in 2009 and tore all the ligaments in her knee forcing her to have surgery.

She said: “Another parent reversed into my knee and I am still suffering today.

“My eight-year-old daughter goes to this school and my biggest concern was what if had been her?

“We need to stop cars coming down this road because next time it’s going to be a child.

“At the end of the day, the people that come down this road have got no consideration for other people’s children.

“Nobody should be coming down this road when there are so many children about.

“I work at the hospital and I should be allowed to let my daughter wander down but I would worry too much about her safety.

“It scares her coming down this road, which isn’t right either.”

Alison McGrath has been coming to the school for 14 years and said the problem has got progressively worse.

She said: “The morning is worse. Some parents just stop, fling their children out and carry on.

“Somebody has to do something about this, we can’t expect the police to be here every day.

“The people who are parking on George Street are also getting extremely rude and more abusive, it is not on.

“Today children and parents have been able to walk out of school and not be so concerned that they are going to get run over.

“This is what is should be like.”

Alison said that people parking on Holly Bank Road, adjacent to the school made that road increasingly chaotic.

Mum-of-one Helen McGinlay, of Quarmby, said: “Cars get in the way and children and parents have to dodge in and out of them, it is so dangerous.

“You can’t get access to the school and something needs to be done about it. We want Kirklees Council to make this road permit only.”

Acting headteacher Nicola Beaumont commented on the parent-led protest. She said: “Driving and parking on George Street is an ongoing issue. We are constantly reminding parents through newsletters but unfortunately they do not always pay attention. Clearly at the school, our main concern is the safety of the children. We do not want cars coming up and down George Street or parking on it. Some parents park further away but others insist on parking as close to the school as possible.”
