A woman who crashed her car while four times the limit had turned to drink following the breakdown of her marriage.

Amanda Cotran, of College Avenue in Lindley, appeared before Kirklees magistrates where she pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

The court heard that the 51-year-old was driving on April 9 when she ran into the back of another vehicle stopped at a pedestrian crossing on Edgerton Road.

The driver went to speak to Cotran and took her car keys from the ignition after smelling alcohol on her breath.

Police were called and Cotran was arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

Further police station tests showed that she had 142 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

This was four times over the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Cotran said that she had been out drinking in the Black Bull pub in Lindley with friends prior to the accident.

She had a previous drink-driving conviction on her record from 2008, the court heard.

Her solicitor explained that she had struggled after her partner of 24 years left her following an affair.

Cotran was left with high mortgage and debts and turned to drink to escape the difficulties of her life.

Magistrates ordered a full report before sentencing her on May 13.

They banned her from driving in the meantime.
