Bad driver crackdown

West Yorkshire Police has launched a new operation in Halifax to target nuisance motorists and dangerous drivers.

Operation Hawmill will focus on what are known as the ‘Fatal Four’ offences - the four factors most likely to contribute to a fatal road traffic collision. These are being over the prescribed limit through drink or drug use, speeding, using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

Officers have already seized two dozen vehicles for no insurance, and given over 90 tickets for offences such as speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone whilst driving and driving through a red light.

In the first four weeks of the operation, officers have stopped over 90 people with a third of those being for inappropriate speed.

Bloodied plaster found stuck to Aldi crisps

Well this has turned my stomach: Meltham resident Ben Scoffield lost his appetite after finding a bloodied plaster stuck to his bag of Aldi crisps.

Ben, 26, made the grim discovery in a multipack bag he bought from the store’s Slaithwaite branch earlier this week.

Aldi have said they are looking into how the plaster got there.

Woman kicked and punched in face outside station

Police have released CCTV after a woman was kicked and punched outside Leeds Station.

The 19-year-old victim was waiting for a taxi outside the Queens Hotel when she was approached by a woman and punched and kicked in the face in a seemingly unprovoked attack.

The incident took place at around 10pm on Tuesday 13 September. Police are hoping someone in the region can identify the woman from the CCTV, who they want to speak to as part of the enquiry.

Former Giants player assaulted anti-doping officer

A former Huddersfield Giants player has been spared jail after assaulting an anti-doping officer who was carrying out a random drugs test at his home.

Sam Barlow, who currently plays for Leigh, was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.

Bradford Crown Court heard how Barlow had become aggressive and abusive towards UK Anti-Doping official Mark Dean, who was terrified the 6ft 3in player would become violent.

Barlow, 28, of Garside Drive, Halifax, played for the Giants after signing a two-year contract in 2007.

More A&E visits due to community care failures

One in five carers have taken their loved ones to A&E in the past year because they didn’t know where else to turn, a study has found.

Charity Carers UK found a fifth of people caring for others have had to visit emergency departments because of failures in GPs’ our of hours services and district nurses.

More than half of those who visited hospital (55 per cent) did so because of a lack of health support in the community or to them as a carer.

Rare black moon in Huddersfield tonight

Don’t forget to catch a glimpse of the sky tonight - we are due to get a black moon!

The rare lunar event means the moon will be blacked out due to the visible side facing away from the Earth - so it’s not technically visible. You can catch it from 01.10am.

We last had a black moon in March 2014. Many spiritualists have previously claimed the black moon could herald an end to the human race, but seeing as we’ve had thousands over the course of time, I think we’re okay for now.

Body cameras lead to huge decrease in complaints

West Yorkshire Police were used in a university experiment to test the effectiveness of police body cameras.

The University of Cambridge found the cameras led to an 93 per cent decrease in complaints against officers over 12 months.

The findings revealed there were 113 complaints made against officers throughout the 12 month trial, compared with 1,539 in the 12 months before.

Albert Street cordoned off to aid tip firefighters

Word that police have cordoned off the end of Albert Street (near Grappolo’s) this morning. Just to reassure you all that nothing sinister has happened and this is to help fire crews who are still at the tip blaze today.

The fire service were there yesterday evening and shut the street, which is used by commuters heading out of the town centre. If we hear anymore on this throughout the day, you’ll see it here first.

Crews said this morning that they are desperate for Kirklees to start clearing the waste so they can tackle the root of the fire.

Huddersfield helped power Rosetta space probe

Did you know a company from Lepton helped build the Rosetta space probe which is in the news again today?

Reliance Precision designed a gear wheel which helps open solar panels powering the satellite, which is to soon come to and end of its two-year mission.

Scientists say the satellite is to deliberately crash into the Philae comet, which it has been tracking since 2014. Evidence collected from its mission will help sceintists with important research.

A job well done, I think.
