#HandsOffHRI: Support from London

And while on the subject, a campaigner who helped save the A&E department in Lewisham, London, had this to say:

Vicky Penner said: “I watched on the live feed yesterday and it really reminded me of the TSA meetings in Lewisham a couple of years back. At the time, I was really shocked that these so-called clinicians and NHS Managers took NO notice of patients’ valid concerns and pressed ahead anyway, seemingly regardless of evidence. Sadly I expect it now though.

“They implied yesterday that the community and media “misunderstood” the proposal. Utter tosh!!!!!! There is a HUGE difference between an Urgent Care centre and a proper A&E and local people in Huddersfield understand very clearly what’s going on which is why HRI has become such a massive community movement.

“You must get the message out there that the fight continues. Sending lots of support and love from SE London, we know how gutted you must be that common sense didn’t prevail yet but THIS IS NOT OVER and is sadly going on in local areas right across the country. Go HRI, there are lots of people behind you.”

In Summer 2013, the High Court successfully overturned cuts implemented to Lewisham General Hospital made by Jeremy Hunt following outrage from campaign group Save Lewisham Hospital.

"They cannot see the bigger picture"

Here is what #HandsOffHRI founder Karl Deitch had to say after yesterday’s vote to close our A&E:

“Well it is a shock, but then again it isn’t.

“But, It was hard to sit and watch & listen.

“The CCG have never listened and that is a real problem. They’re so absorbed in their plans that they cannot see the bigger picture.

“You know the saying ‘If you tell yourself a lie so many times, you might actually start to believe it’s real?’ This is their problem.

“They don’t have the courage to stand up and say “we’ve made a mistake” one thing for sure - they’ve made a big one now.

“I wasn’t expecting a victory today - but I was expecting less smarmy faces and a bit more respect from a panel of ‘alleged’ professionals.

“The fight goes on- we have some great people messaging me who want to be part of it.”

Best mugshot ever?

This charmer is 34-year-old Michael Watson, who has been put behind bars for six years for a robbery in Wrenthorpe.

Watson and his co-defendants Wesley Harper and Phillip Littleford were jailed at Leeds Crown Court today after they went into a shop threatening a female staff member with a knife and shotgun in August, before fleeing with cash from the till and a charity box.

The three, all from Oldham, were sentenced to a total of 19 years between them.

Meanwhile, in Happy Valley, vandals have targeted Hebden Bridge Town Hall with the Illuminati logo.

Banksy, this ain’t. The charmers have spray painted the bizarre triangle symbols outside the building and police are appealing for witnesses. The town hall was at the centre of efforts to pull together following the December floods.

Coeliac charity slam CCG

A charity supporting people with coeliac disease has hit out at North Kirklees and Greater Huddersfield CCGs for cutting free gluten-free foods for patients.

Coeliacs is an auto-immune condition which means people cannot eat foods with gluten, such as bread and pasta.

The CCGs have proposed cuts to safe foods for people with the disorder, something which last year cost them £283,000.

Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Coeliac UK, said: “As NICE quality standards are developed in line with clinical evidence and expert consensus, it is clear that the proposal by North Kirklees and Greater Huddersfield CCGs to remove vital front-line services, is being based on budget rather than patient need or clinical evidence. Cutting gluten-free prescribing exacerbates health inequalities, further disadvantaging the most vulnerable patients with coeliac disease.”

Batley & Spen candidate resigns from UKIP

One of the candidates in yesterday’s Batley & Spen by-election has announced he is resigning from his party.

Waqas Ali Khan stood as an independent candidate, but has stood as a UKIP candidate in previous elections. UKIP, along with other mainstream parties, announced back in June that they would not be contesting the seat out of respect for Jo Cox.

Thieves pull ATM from petrol station wall

Police have released a CCTV image after thieves pulled a cash machine from a wall at a Heckmondwike petrol station.

Four male suspects pulled up at the petrol station in two separate vehicles on October 10 and attempted to force the cash machine from the wall by attaching a hook to the machine and connecting it to a 4 x 4 vehicle. The car was then driven off at speed in order to pull the machine from the wall.

The suspects all wore balaclavas, with the one in the picture wearing a distinctive one.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Birkenshaw via 101 quoting crime reference 13160483216.

WATCH: Tracy Brabin heckled by far-right during acceptance speech

Here is some video of Batley & Spen’s new MP Tracy Brabin, who was heckled by far-right candidates during her acceptance speech earlier this morning.

Shocking stuff. All other candidates in the by-election lost their deposits after they failed to secure enough votes.
