Girl, 4, in hospital after being shot by arrow

A four-year-old girl was rushed to hospital after she was shot with an arrow, police have said.

The girl was taken to Leeds General Infirmary after reportedly being injured while a relative was practising archery with a crossbow at a house in Halifax.

An 18-year-old man has been helping police with enquiries, but the girl’s injuries are not believed to have been caused intentionally. The incident happened at a house on Furness Drive in Illingworth on Saturday.

Det Insp Gary Stephenson, of Calderdale District CID, said: “Enquiries are ongoing to determine precisely how this girl has come to be injured.

“Our investigations suggest she was not intentionally injured and an 18-year-old male is assisting us with our enquiries.

“Specially trained officers are working to support her family as our investigations continue.”

Blind sculptor to recreate police horses from touch

A sculptor with visual impairment has visited West Yorkshire Police horses and dogs to study them for an upcoming project.

Branwyn Owens visited the animals as she plans to create sculptures of them to raise money for the K9 Memorial Fund.

The sculptures will be sold at £100 each with all the money going to the charity honouring the service horses and dogs give to the force.

Branwyn, 42, lost her sight in 2005 and creates sculptures entirely by using her sense of touch. What a lovely tribute!

Single parents "owed millions"

Single parents in West Yorkshire are owed more than £6million in unpaid child maintenance fees, a study has revealed.

Campaign group Gingerbread identified our region as one of the worst for parents owed money to the government’s Child Support Agency (CSA).

The CSA, which has been criticised by struggling single parents, is now doing less to sort unpaid debts and transferring its focus onto Child Maintenance.

Fiona Weir, chief executive of Gingerbread who support single-parent families, said: “The failure of the CSA to collect these millions of pounds of child maintenance means that children are going without and single parents have been left poorer.

“Child poverty in single-parent families is set to double in the next four years, so it’s even more essential that this money is collected.”
