Police have tonight released information about two arrests in relation to sex trafficking allegations.

Deadline for Christmas deliveries...to the South Pole!

Sending Christmas card or presents to Antartica? Today is your last chance to get them off in time for the big day!

Believe it or not, there are 150 British Antarctic Survey researchers on the frozen continent. Today is the last posting date on which Post Office can guarantee deliveries will get there on time.

Mail travels by plane to the Falklands, 8,000 miles away. From there, it is loaded onto one of two BAS ships, or a Royal Navy ice patrol vessel that serves the five British Antarctic research stations. A regular postal service has served this area since the 1950s.

Not the most happening spot for festive bashes, but at least a white Christmas is guaranteed!

File photo dated 16/09/13 of a postman carrying bags of mail, as new figures show that more than nine out of 10 first-class letters and virtually every second-class item of mail have been delivered on time. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Friday August 26, 2016. The Royal Mail reported it has beaten its regulatory first-class mail target for the first quarter of the financial year, delivering 93.3% the next working day. See PA story INDUSTRY Mail. Mugging victim thanks strangers who leaped to her defence

A shopper from Ravensthorpe has thanked the strangers who chased the man who mugged her and held him until police arrived.

Abigail Kenny, 36, was getting into a taxi when a man grabbed her handbag from her trolley outside Lidl in Dewsbury yesterday.

But a nearby stranger leaped to action and chased the mugger, while two others held him down. Thanks to their actions, Abigail managed to get her purse back with all her money intact.

She said: “It all happened so fast - I didn’t see the guys who held the man down round the corner of the store. I just want to say thanks to everyone that helped me.”

"Don't dress up pets for Halloween" - vets

Vets are urging pet owners not to dress up their dogs and cats this Halloween.

Andrew Butcher, Chief Veterinary Officer at MedicAnimal, said: “While I don’t want to be a party pooper, it’s vital that you consider how your dog might feel when being dressed up.

“It is disrespectful to have your dog as the butt of the joke, leaving them feeling humiliated and uncomfortable. In fact, one of the 5 Freedoms (under the Animal Welfare Act 2007) is for an animal to be able to ‘express normal behaviour’, which might not be possible when pets are wearing costumes.

“However, there is one exception - sturdy and well-fitting coats that keep your pet warm and dry and that are designed properly to allow your pet to move their legs, ears and tail as nature intended – definitely have a role to play in the winter time.”

Update: Fire at Kirklees College

And speaking of our amazing fire service - just a bit more detail on the fire at the Kirklees College building coming in.

The fire engulfed 20% of the top floor and was centred in one of the classrooms. The team at Huddersfield Fire Station said they manage to get it under control before it spread to the rest of the building and it is now under wraps. No one is thought to have been hurt.

This is not the first incident of fires being started at the old derelict building. In fact the last one was only in June this year, with previous incidents in April and February.

Local firefighters nominated for Pride of Britain

Two local firefighters have been nominated for the Pride of Britain Awards after their bravery during the Calderdale Floods.

Rastrick firefighters Gavin Shaw and Andy Lockwood saved an elderly man during the December disaster after his Land Rover was caught in the rising waters and he became stuck behind the wheel and submerged up to his chin.

The two had to break through the roof of the vehicle and pull out the man, who was suffering from shock and hypothermia. An amazing show of bravery and a reminder of how our services put their own lives at risk to save others.

Fire at Kirklees College building "started deliberately"

Anyone who was on the ringroad last night may have noticed part of it was closed off following a fire at the old Kirklees College building.

Fire services are now saying the fire - which was on a classroom on the top floor of the derelict building - is thought to have been started deliberately.

Crews were called out at 7.45pm and police closed the road until 9. Watch commander Andy Rose from Huddersfield Fire Station said there is no way the fire could have been started deliberately as all mains are now switched off. The building has been boarded back up and police are investigating.
