Regional: Arrests after Halloween 'ride out'

Police investigating the Halloween ‘ride out’ incident in Kirkstall, Leeds where a large number of motorbikes congregated and were ridden dangerously through the city have arrested seven people in early morning raids today.

The six men, aged 22 to 26, and a 29-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance in relation to the incident where motorbikes and quad bikes congregated in Kirkstall Road before a large number were ridden through the city centre en masse, including through pedestrian areas and shopping arcades, on the evening of October 31.

Officers from Leeds District, supported by colleagues from West Yorkshire Police’s Protective Services Operations, made the arrests and carried out searches of addresses in Bramley, Armley, Harehills, Burmantofts, Roundhay, Farnley, and Batley.

They seized four motorbikes and a number of items of motorcycle equipment, such as helmets and clothing, as part of the investigation.

The arrests follow comprehensive enquiries into the incident including weeks of detailed analysis of CCTV images and other footage from the night.

Police are seeking to identify those pictured below:

Ambulances were diverted to an A&E earmarked for downgrade because a hospital designated as an ‘emergency care centre’ couldn’t cope.

Some 61 ambulances were diverted to Dewsbury A&E in the last 12 months, according to figures obtained under Freedom of Information by new Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin.

Seven arrested following Halloween 'ride out'

Six men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of taking part in a Halloween ‘ride out’.

A ‘ride out’ is where large numbers of motorbike, scooter and quad bike riders congregate and ride in a dangerous and antisocial manner around an urban area.

The incident began on Kirkstall Road before a large number of bikes were ridden through the city centre en masse, including through pedestrian areas and shopping arcades, on the evening of October 31.

The six men, aged 22 to 26, and a 29-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.

This followed the search of properties in Leeds and Kirklees where motorbikes and motorcycle equipment, such as helmets and clothing, were seized by police.

Chief Supt Paul Money, Leeds District Commander, said: “The behaviour that was witnessed in the city that night put people’s safety at risk, caused unnecessary fear to the public and created an image of lawlessness that we simply cannot allow to go unchecked.”

Bid for private prosecution of killer bin lorry driver rejected

A court bid to bring a rare private prosecution against Glasgow bin lorry crash driver Harry Clarke has been rejected by senior judges.
The family of three crash victims took their case for the 59-year-old to be put on trial to the Appeal Court in Edinburgh earlier this year.
The unusual legal move followed a controversial Crown Office decision not to prosecute Mr Clarke, who had blacked out behind the wheel on the day of the fatal crash in December 2014.
Judges Lady Dorrian, Lord Menzies and Lord Drummond Young had been considering the Bill for Criminal Letters since hearing final arguments in the case in October and ruled on Friday the family cannot pursue a private prosecution of Mr Clarke.
The court also rejected a similar plea for a private prosecution of motorist William Payne, lodged by the families of students Mhairi Convy and Laura Stewart, who were knocked down and killed in Glasgow in 2010.

And as the popular site winds down to its official closure on December 21 a final appeal has gone out to preserve the attraction for the future.

Jacqueline Ryder, chair of the Friends of Red House Museum, said she hoped it was still possible to keep the atmosphere of the 17th century building alive.
