"£1 or £40 shampoo? It all does the same job..."

A Huddersfield academic has come clean on national TV about the price of shampoo - saying expensive bottles do no more than the stuff you get for £1.

The University’s Dr Laura Waters was asked BBC Horizon to investigate the difference between cheap and expensive shampoo, with some brands reaching up to £40.

Dr Waters, who lectures and researches in chemistry and pharmaceutical science, carried out tests on hair donated by two students. She concluded that all shampoos do the same job when it comes to cleaning hair, but at the same time, she said it is worth “shelling out” for problem hair.

Police Sgt says thousands still "flouting the law" on phone use

Here’s what West Yorkshire Police Sgt Gary Roper has said on the new law on mobile phone use while driving:

“Targeting motorists who use a mobile phone continues to be a priority for our roads policing teams and something we concentrating on with the imminent change in legislation increasing the penalties for offenders.

“The law banning the use of mobile phones while driving has been in place for well over a decade now but we are still seeing thousands of people each year flouting the law and endangering not only themselves but other road users as well.

“The risks associated with using a phone while behind the wheel are very clear. Any driver will be distracted by a phone call or text message, it affects the ability to concentrate and anticipate the road ahead, putting the driver and other road users at risk

“We are also seeing a growing trend of motorists updating social media, streaming music or video’s, checking emails and generally surfing the internet whilst also being in control of a vehicle. This is really concerning, as research has shown that research has shown that driving while using a phone makes you four times more likely to be involved in a collision and studies by the Transport Research Laboratory suggest that using a hand-held mobile while driving can be more dangerous than drink-driving.”

New law to crack down on using smart phones behind the wheel

It might not be considered crime of the century to check your emails while driving, but a new law is to come into force in a few weeks which means police can slap you with an on-the-spot penalty if you’re caught using your phone at the wheel.

Penalties are set to double as a new, stricter law is introduced on March 1, meaning police can give you six points on your licence and a £200 fine.

This counts not just for making or taking a call, but also for glancing at Facebook or messaging. Upshot is, don’t do it.
