Scandanavian birds settle - in Tesco car park!

Here are a couple of stunning pictures taken by local photographer and bird watcher Trevor Doherty.

These delightful little creatures are waxwings - and they’ve flown all the way from Scandanavia to Huddersfield for the winter. These pictures show them gathered in a tree and grazing on berries near the Tesco on the town centre ring road.

There a few flocks each year, known as an irruption. Plus, they make a lovely change to pigeons pinching your pasties in St George’s Square.

Majority of female MPs have suffered abuse from public

More than two thirds of female MPs have considered quitting out of fears for their safety, it’s been revealed.

A survey conducted by BBC Radio 5 asked a third of the UK’s 125 female reprasentatives and found an overwhelming majority have received some form of verbal abuse. A third have considered quitting as a result.

The findings are especially concerning in the wake of the murder of Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox.

And in 2015, Daniel Labacik was convicted of sending violent rape threats on Twitter to Paula Sherriff.

Paula Sherriff will vote to trigger Article 50

We’ve had confirmation that Paula Sherriff will vote to trigger Article 50 and begin the process of leaving the EU, when the vote goes ahead in Parliament.

The Dewsbury MP and Remain campaigner has said she believes “it would be wrong for MPs to go against the wishes of the majority”.

Here is her statement in full: “Even though I voted to remain in the EU, I accept and respect the result of the referendum. I absolutely believe in democracy and it would be wrong for MPs to go against the wishes of the majority.

“I also believe that it is right to fight for the best possible Brexit deal. The Tory Government do not have a blank cheque to negotiate a deal that puts jobs, workers’ rights and our economy at risk.

“Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision is the right one. It is only right that MPs are given the opportunity to hold Ministers to account on the decisions they now make which will have profound consequences over decades to come.”

We now have confirmation that Paula Sherriff, Tracy Brabin and Jason McCartney will all vote to trigger Article 50. We’re waiting on confirmation from Barry Sheerman, although he did tweet this just earlier:

Mother of two killed in fire hands petition to Downing Street

A Penistone woman who lost her two sons in a house fire started by their father has visited Downing Street to hand in a petition calling for a review over parental access laws.

Paul and Jack Sykes, nine and 12, were killed while staying with father Darren for a weekend at his home in Penistone in 2014. Mr Sykes, 44, is thought to have deliberately caused the fire in which he also died. Their mother Claire Throssell, has now gathered 40,000 signatures, with the help of Women’s Aid, calling for the government and family courts to ensure perpetrators of domestic abuse are not granted access to the family’s children.

Claire Throssell, whose children were killed by her abusive ex-husband in 2014, hands in petition to Downing Street in London calling for an end to unsafe child contact with dangerous perpetrators of domestic violence.
