The precautionary recall is over a product called the Black Power Wand, described as a “sleek” and “incredible body massager”.

Bosses at the store, which has a branch on Huddersfield’s King Street, say that despite the product passing safety tests, there have been a small number of isolated incidents which have caused concern.

Twitter to take new steps in combating abuse

Twitter has announced new rules implemented to crack down on online abuse and hate speech.

The site say they plan to stop people creating new accounts if they are suspended, and that they would be taking steps to identify people previously removed from the site to block any future attempts they may make to create new accounts.

A new safe search feature also means you can filter out potentially explicit or sensitive content when making searches on Twitter.

Twitter’s Ed Ho said the update was to help make the platform safer for users. “Making Twitter a safer place is our primary focus,” he said. We stand for freedom of expression and people being able to see all sides of any topic. That’s put in jeopardy when abuse and harassment stifle and silence those voices. We won’t tolerate it and we’re launching new efforts to stop it.”

Praise for Huddersfield academic's book on Muslim integration

A Huddersfield academic has written a book on Muslim segregation in Britain, which has been named one of the top education books of the year.

Dr Shamim Miah, from the University of Huddersfield, has had his book Muslims, Schooling and the Question of Self-Segregation published. The Society of Education Studies have named it as one of the best educational theses for 2016.

In his book, Dr Miah conducts a study into Muslims in the UK, and argues that Government reports on Muslim communities are disconnected from the truth.

“According to the Government’s reports,” said Dr Shamim, “Muslim communities are acknowledged as having problems with integrating, but when we go and speak to people in the community, they say they don’t.”

Halifax MP Holly Lynch will be putting her case for stronger clamp downs on attacks on emergency workers in Parliament later today.

Holly has been a vehement campaigner for more punishments for those who assault police, paramedics and and firefighters since witnessing an assault on a police officer she was shadowing on a drive patrol in Calderdale last year.

She wants cases to be taken more seriously by the courts, and for them to be always heard in front of Crown Courts. She will be speaking later this afternoon.

West Yorkshire Police host Safer Internet Day

West Yorkshire Police are today holding their “Safer Internet Day”, promoting safe and secure use of the web and preventing cyber crimes.

WYP are one of the few forces in the country to have a specialist team dedicated to dealing with cyber crime. Officers will be out chatting to members of the public at several location today about being internet-savvy.

Assistant Chief Constable Russ Foster of West Yorkshire Police, said: “We live in an age when almost everyone has access to the internet through a laptop / computer, tablet or mobile phone. People almost lead a second life on the internet, doing much of their banking, shopping and communication there. The internet provides a mass of positive opportunities for people but it can also be used by criminals for negative reasons too.

“By taking some simple precautions though we can all stop these criminals in their tracks. As a Force we do everything we can to continually spread the message about cyber security (which includes safe use of the internet) and Safer Internet Day is another opportunity to spread that message.”

Officers will be at White Rose Shopping Centre, Trinity Walk in Wakefield and Woolshops in Halifax.

Yorkshire workers need 64% pay rise to afford homes

The average full-time worker in Yorkshire would need a 64% pay rise to afford a home, it has been revealed.

The staggering rise would mean someone would just be able to take out a mortgage due to the price of homes on the market.

According to the Yorkshire and the Humber Homes Truths 2016/17 report, those earning any less than £39,811 a year are now priced out of buying the average home in the area. The report also exposes the severe shortfall of new homes in recent years. Between 2011 and 2015, there were over 37,000 too few homes built across Yorkshire and the Humber to keep up with demand.

Karen Matthews drama to air on BBC tonight

BBC’s The Moorside - a drama on the kidnapping of Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury - will be aired on TV tonight.

The series, which stars Sheridan Smith and focuses on the community’s search for Shannon after she was thought to be missing, has been slammed by many, including the family.

But others have praised the show, saying it will stop people forgetting the crime committed by Karen Matthews and Michael Donovan.

One caller told BBC Radio Leeds this morning: “I think it should be made. Everybody needs to know what they did, it was awful what they did.”

One Dewsbury Moor resident said he remembered police undertaking door-to-door enquiries when Shannon went missing and was concerned about how the show would represent the town.

He said: “It was really worrying that someone in our area might have taken a child. What we’re known for is Karen Matthews and one of the 7/7 bombers - but we’re better than that.”

Two to be sentenced to racial abuse on tram

Two men will be sentenced today after admitting to the racial abuse of a former Huddersfield student on a Manchester city centre tram.

Juan Jasso, of Todmorden, was told “you’re not even from England” and to “get back to Africa” by Robert Molloy and Aaron Cauchi.

The incident, which was five days after the EU referendum, was filmed by a shocked passenger and went viral. The two, along with another 16-year-old youth who cannot legally be identified, were later arrested and admitted the abuse yesterday.

Molloy, 20, and Cauchi, 19, will be sentenced later today. The 16-year-old has been given a six-month referral order after appearing before a youth court yesterday.

Burglary victim was stabbed in the thigh by balaclava thugs

Police have issued an appeal this morning after a man was burgled and stabbed by four thugs at his Cowlersley home.

The victim had stepped outside his home on Clara Street when the men in balaclavas approached him, pushing him back and beginning a search of his home, demanding cash.

The suspects are described as two white men, one with a ginger beard, and two either black or Asian males. If you have any information or witnessed anything at the time, police urge you come forward. Please contact Dc Kris Roberts at Kirklees CID via 101.
